Needle Felting Bunny // Conejo de Fieltrado con Aguja

Hace un tiempo, una amiga me regaló un montón de lana para hacer lo que en inglés se conoce como needle felting, o fieltrado con aguja (que suena súper mal). A grandes rasgos, consiste en esculpir figuras usando este tipo de lana y unas agujas especiales.

Por circunstancias que serán reveladas en su momento (chanchán), no he podido ponerme a experimentar este hobbie hasta justo ayer. No tengo todo lo necesario, puesto que tuve que usar la parte de esponja de un estropajo para apoyarme y seguramente las agujas que me compré sean bastante reguleras (y la lana no estaba muy peinada). Sin embargo, a pesar de que sé que tiene sus fallos, éste fue mi primer intento con el needle felting.

(Sí, los ojos son Photoshop, pero es que todavía no tengo ojos que ponerle, los acabo de encargar por eBay.)

Some time ago, a friend gave me a bunch of wool for needle felting. In broad terms, needle felting consists of sculpting figures using this kind of wool and some special needles.

Due to some circumstances which will be revealed in due course (suspense music), I haven’t had free time to sit down and experiment till yesterday. I guess I haven’t got all the proper equipment though, since I had to use the sponge bit of a scourer to rest the piece while pricking it and I bet my needles aren’t precisely the best (plus the wool wasn’t as combed). However, even though I know it’s got some mistakes, this was my first attempt at needle felting.

(Yep, it’s got Photoshop eyes, but I still haven’t got toy eyes – I just ordered them from eBay!)

Charlie, the wallaby // Charlie, el wallaby

Creo que va siendo hora de que cuente la historia detrás de esta ilustración.

I think it’s about time I tell the story behind this illustration.

Desde hace más de un año soy una voluntaria en Shepreth Wildlife Park, como ya mencioné en su día.  Pues bien, ahí vive un animalito que me enamoró desde el primer día en que su cuidador me lo presentó: CHARLIE. Charlie es un marsupial diprotodonto de la familia Macropodidae que no es lo suficientemente grande para ser considerado un canguro. Es decir, Charlie es un wallaby, y lo que le hace brillar entre todos sus amiguitos con marsupia del parque es el amor que rezuma por todos y cada uno de sus poros. Charlie fue criado a mano y es por ello que deja a los humanos que recogemos sus cacas rascarle la barbilla, cogerle las manitas y sobarle el lomito. Y muchas veces yo, como buena desequilibrada mental, me pregunto si sería posible llevármelo un día para casa disfrazado de niño para que nadie lo note. ¿Vosotros qué pensáis?

I’ve been a volunteer at Shepreth Wildlife Park for over a year now, as I mentioned in a previous post. Well, there lives a little animal who I fell in love with from the very first day his keeper introduced us: CHARLIE. Charlie is a small-sized macropod found in Australia and he belongs to the same taxonomic family as kangaroos. Therefore, Charlie is a wallaby and what makes him stand out from the rest of his fellow pouched buddies is the love that oozes from every single pore of his body. Charlie was hand-raised and that’s why he lets those humans who clean his poo scratch his chin, hold his hands and stroke his back. And, very often, I wonder, as the mentally unstable woman I am, if it would be possible to take him home disguised as a kid so as not to raise suspicion. What do you reckon?

Cat brooches // Broches de gatos

Hace un tiempo, y gracias a una de mis mejores amiguitas, descubrí la magia del plástico que encoje. Me cautivó de tal manera que decidí darle una oportunidad y hacerle un hueco en mi tienda Etsy. Estos son los resultados de los broches de gatitos, los cuales han tenido bastante éxito en los mercadillos de este invierno.

Some time ago, and thanks to one of my best friends, I discovered the magic of shrinkable plastic. I captivated me to such an extent that I decided to give it an opportunity and make space for it on my Etsy shop. These are the results for the kitty brooches, which have been quite successful at the winter markets.

Hedgehog planter // Maceta-erizo

Ayer por fin pude recoger mi maceta-erizo de la clase de cerámica. Ha sido un proceso largo, puesto que, si vas a poner en marcha un horno que se calienta hasta 2000ºC, quieres asegurarte de que aprovechas al máximo la energía llenándolo todo lo que se pueda. Lo modelé con arcilla rakú y, antes de la primera cocción, pinté los ojos y nariz con engobe blanco y negro, respectivamente. Tras la cocción biscuit, lo bañé en esmalte transparente y, finalmente, se horneó a unos 1200ºC convitiéndolo en stoneware.

Yesterday I could finally pick up my hedgehog planter from the pottery class. It’s been a long process because, when you’re going to turn on a kiln that can reach 2,000ºC, you want to make sure you make the most of the energy you’re going to use by filling it up as much as possible. I modelled it in raku clay and, before the bisque firing, I painted its eyes and nose with white and black slip, respectively. After the bisque firing, I dipped it in transparent glaze and, finally, it was fired at around 1,200ºC turning it into stoneware.

Ahora sólo necesita un poco de tierra y unas cuantas “púas” verdes.

Now it just needs a little bit of compost and some green “spikes”.

Ferias de Artesanía y Autoedición en 2014 // Craft and Zine Fairs in 2014

A pesar de que 2014 no se ha visto muy reflejado en las entradas de este blog, ha estado repleto de trabajo en varios frentes. Uno de ellos es la aventura que decidimos emprender mi amiga e ilustradora Lorena García y yo: poner puestos en mercaditos tanto de autoedición como de artesanía.

Despite the year 2014 not seeing this blog much, it has been full of work on several fronts. One of them is the adventure my friend and illustrator Lorena García and I decided to set out on: holding a stall in different zine fairs and craft markets.

Este año hemos tenido la suerte de estar juntas en la Bristol Comic and Zine Fair, Zine World (Londres) y la Mill Road Winter Fair (Cambridge). Además, también puse una mesa yo sola en el Impington Christmas Farmers Market.

This year we’ve been lucky to be together at the Bristol Comic and Zine Fair, Zine World (London) and Mill Road Winter Fair (Cambridge).  Also, I put up a table by myself at the Impington Christmas Farmers Market.

Creo que ambas podemos decir que aprendimos, no muchas, sino muchísimas cosas. No sé el tiempo que pasará hasta que volvamos a repetir la experiencia, pero, al menos por mi parte, estoy segura de que volveré, como Terminator.

I believe we both can say we learned an awful lot of things. I don’t know how long it will be till we repeat the experience again but I’m pretty sure, at least from my part, I’ll be back, like Terminator.

El 2014 ha traído momentos muy memorables, pero que seguro que no son nada en comparación con lo que nos espera a todos en 2015.

Russafa Book Weekend 2014 #RBW

RUSSAFA BOOK WEEKEND 14, un evento en torno al libro, tuvo lugar los días 17, 18 y 19 de octubre en Ruzafa Gallery (Pedro III el Grande, 11, Valencia), así como en ocho librerías del barrio. El objetivo de RUSSAFA BOOK WEEKEND 14 fue dar visibilidad a aquellas librerías, editoriales y publicaciones valencianas que apuestan por la singularidad y la calidad en todas sus facetas.

 

Y allí estuvo APIV con un stand donde sus socios pudimos poner a la venta nuestro material. Gracias a Francisco Salcedo, yo también pude estar “presente” en forma de zines, postales y chapas.

 

 

RUSSAFA BOOK WEEKEND 14, an event about books, took place on 17th, 18th and 19th of October at Ruzafa Gallery (Pedro III el Grande, Valencia, Spain) as well as at eight other local bookshoops. RUSSAFA BOOK WEEKEND 14‘s goal was to draw attention to those Valencian bookshops, publishers and publications which choose uniqueness and quality in every aspect.

 

And there it was APIV with a stall where their members could sell our artwork. Thanks to Francisco Salcedo, I could also be “present” in the form of zines, postcards and badges.
